Manuel Velasco Suárez was born on December 28, 1914 in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas in México. He died on December 2, 2001 in México City, México. Being a strong willed person and displaying unusually lofty purposes, he attained great achievements in the field of medicine. He built hospitals for the mentally ill as well built the National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery in México City which attend to the mental and medical needs of tens of thousands of low-income patients. It was here that he trained thousands of medical specialists. He also founded universities and technical schools during the period of time he served as governor of the State of Chiapas. He became Professor Emeritus of the National Autonomous University of Mexico and he was named Honoris Causa in five other universities. He received the Medal of Honor of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies.
